Overview of the Official App

The French government provides an official mobile application for paying traffic fines. Known as the "Amendes.gouv" app, it offers a convenient alternative to the website, particularly useful for scanning QR codes on your fine notice and completing payments on the go.

The app is available for both iOS and Android devices and provides the same secure payment processing as the website. For many users, especially those comfortable with mobile payments, the app offers a faster and more intuitive experience.

Step-by-Step Payment via App

Method 1: Using QR Code Scan

This is the fastest and most accurate method:

  1. Open the App
Launch the Amendes.gouv app on your device. Allow camera permissions if prompted during first use.
  2. Select Scan Option
Tap the QR code scanner icon, typically prominently displayed on the home screen.
  3. Scan Your Notice
Point your camera at the QR code on your fine notice. Ensure good lighting and hold steady until the code is recognized.
  4. Verify Information
The app will display your fine details automatically. Review to confirm accuracy.
  5. Proceed to Payment
Tap the payment button and select your preferred payment method.
  6. Complete Transaction
Use biometric authentication (Face ID, fingerprint) or enter payment details manually. Confirm the payment.
  7. Save Confirmation
Screenshot the confirmation or use the app's option to email/save the receipt.

Method 2: Manual Entry

If scanning is not working or your notice lacks a QR code:

  1. Select Manual Entry
From the app home screen, choose the option to enter details manually.
  2. Input Reference Number
Carefully type your notice reference number. The app may guide you on the expected format.

Payment Methods in the App

Apple Pay (iOS)

If you have Apple Pay configured on your iPhone or iPad, you can use it for one-tap payment. This is the fastest method and uses your existing saved cards with biometric security.

Google Pay (Android)

Android users with Google Pay enabled can similarly complete payments quickly using their stored payment methods.

Direct Card Entry

You can also manually enter credit or debit card details directly in the app. The app uses secure encryption, and your full card number is not stored.

Card Compatibility

The app accepts most major international credit and debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and Carte Bancaire. American Express may have limited acceptance.

Troubleshooting App Issues

QR Code Not Scanning

  • Ensure adequate lighting - move to a well-lit area
  • Clean your camera lens
  • Hold the phone steady and at the correct distance (not too close or far)
  • Try flattening crinkled notices
  • If the QR code is damaged, use manual entry instead

App Crashes or Freezes

  • Close and reopen the app
  • Restart your device
  • Check for app updates in your app store
  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection
  • Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app

Payment Fails

  • Verify your card is enabled for international transactions
  • Check that your card has not expired
  • Ensure sufficient funds or credit limit
  • Try a different payment method
  • Contact your bank if issues persist

App vs Website: When to Use Each

Both the app and website provide the same core functionality, but each has advantages:

Use the App When:

  • You have the physical notice with a QR code
  • You prefer mobile payment methods like Apple Pay or Google Pay
  • You want quick, on-the-go access
  • You need to pay multiple fines and want to track them easily

Use the Website When:

  • You are on a computer with the notice details saved digitally
  • You need to print detailed receipts
  • You want to access additional information or help resources
  • The app is experiencing technical difficulties

Security Considerations

The official app employs several security measures:

  • Encryption - All data transmission is encrypted using industry-standard protocols
  • Biometric Authentication - Supports fingerprint and face recognition for payments
  • No Card Storage - Unless you explicitly save it, card details are not retained
  • Session Timeouts - Automatic logout after periods of inactivity

For maximum security, keep your device operating system updated, only download the app from official sources, and avoid using public WiFi networks for payments.

Offline Considerations

The app requires an internet connection to process payments. However, you can use it to scan and verify fine details offline, then complete payment when connectivity is available.

If you are traveling in areas with poor connectivity, consider using the website on a hotel WiFi connection as an alternative.

Keeping Track of Payments

The app maintains a history of payments made through it. This is useful for:

  • Proving payment if disputes arise
  • Personal record-keeping for expense tracking
  • Referencing past fines if you receive multiple violations

Additionally, all payments generate email confirmations (if you provide an email address) that serve as official receipts.
